Everyone Obsessed With Dog Who Stops to Smell the Flowers: 'Precious'

A heartwarming video of the moment a dog stopped to smell the flowers on a walk has delighted the internet.

Posted by Alena, known as @prostoalenaa on TikTok, the clip shows the moment the small dog paused amid a field of vibrant tulips to sniff them. With more than 1.3 million views in three days, the video has delighted dog lovers, who have shared their reactions in the comments.

While we humans enjoy the scent of flowers, dogs have the ability to enjoy them even more, with a sense of smell 10,000 to 100,000 times more acute than ours. Canines have 50 times more smell-sensitive receptors than we do, and research has shown that they even have favorite scents.

A 2022 study from researchers in Poland found that dogs do exhibit preferences for certain scents. The study involved conducting experiments with 14 adult dogs of various breeds, body sizes, and ages ranging from 1 to 14 years.

The animals were exposed to a total of 33 odor samples, which included one neutral sample containing pure dipropylene glycol—a colorless, nearly odorless liquid serving as the control—and 32 samples containing dipropylene glycol mixed with fragrance oils.

Results found that dogs interacted more frequently with the scents blueberry, blackberry, mint, rose, and lavender.

There is also evidence that canines benefit from being allowed to stop and smell flowers. Sniffing is hugely beneficial for them and essential for their well-being. It's stimulating, too—experts tell us just 20 minutes of sniffing is equivalent to an hour's walk in terms of enrichment for your dog.

Smell is a crucial sense for dogs, helping them gather important information about the environment, recognize individuals, make decisions, and learn about their surroundings.

Sniffing has also been shown to have a calming effect on canines; letting them stop and smell their surroundings can reduce stress and anxiety.

"This is so wholesome," added Natflix, while viewer Anna Fon wrote it was the "Most beautiful thing I've ever seen."
