Fab Five: These Colorado Women Were Bridesmaids at Each Other's Weddings, Now They're All State Senators

Known as the "Fab Five," a group of Democratic candidates who were all bridesmaids at each other's weddings and are now set to become state senators after this month's midterm elections, are being credited with helping flip the Colorado Senate from red to blue for the first time since 2013.

Politicians Kerry Donovan, Tammy Story, Faith Winter, Jessie Danielson and Brittany Pettersen said they supported each other with "daily text chains and phone calls" in the lead-up to November 6 elections that saw all five women win their state Senate races by double digits in Colorado.

While Donovan won re-election in her Senate race, the four other members of the "Fab Five" group have been elected to state Senate for the first time. Winter, Danielson and Pettersen served in Colorado's House of Representatives, and Story had been a prominent education advocate before winning her midterm election race.

"We were all in it together," Danielson, told People in a profile of the group.

Winter, a state representative headed to Senate told the magazine that she had worked with Danielson years ago at Emerge Colorado, a group that helps train women candidates to run for local and state office.

"Essentially she was my boss," Winter told People. But, she said she and Danielson have been friends "for a long time as well."

Not only did the two friends and colleagues support each other in the lead-up to the midterm elections, but Danielson also played a key role in supporting Winter when she came forward with allegations of sexual harassment against fellow state representative Steve Lebsock, who was expelled from the legislature in March.

Lebsock had denied the allegations, but an independent investigation found Winter's accusations to be credible and the state representative was eventually expelled from the legislature. Danielson's support for moving a vote on Lebsock's expulsion played a critical role, according to People.

"We had to at least try to get justice," Winter said. "And we had to try and show women that they are believed and that we would change the culture."

While Danielson's support played a crucial role, it was Pettersen, a fellow state representative, that Winter first called after deciding to take her allegations against Lebsock public.

Winter was also a bridesmaid in Pettersen's August 2017 wedding.

Catherine Vaughan, the CEO and founder of progressive election group Flippable, who supported Winter, Danielson and Story in their election races, told People that she was "so excited about what is happening in Colorado.

The Flippable CEO, who gave the "Fab Five" their moniker, said the five politicians were known to champion critical issues, including environmental issues, equal pay, public education, paid family leave and fighting the opioid crisis.

She said she also believes that the group will serve as role models for a new generation of working mothers.
