Fact Check: Did Delta Ban People Who Harassed Romney and Graham in Airports?

Ahead of the presidential inauguration, in the wake of the recent Capitol riots, Delta Airlines issued an alert Thursday to ban firearms in checked luggage for passengers traveling to Washington, D.C. until January 23.

"We are all on high alert based on the events over the last couple weeks up in Washington,″ Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian told CNBC on Thursday.

It appears that banning firearms is not the only recent restriction that Delta Airlines has issued.

"We have banned some passengers for their behavior on a recent flight," Anthony Black, a spokesman for Delta Airlines, told Newsweek.

The ban comes after videos emerged online of separate incidents in which Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) were harassed at different airports.

The Claim

One Twitter user wrote Thursday that "Trump Fans Who Harassed Mitt Romney and Lindsey Graham at the airport have been Put On No-Fly List," in a tweet with more than 1,000 favorites.

Another Twitter user on Thursday wrote "Turning to disruption on recent U.S. flights by supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump, Bastian said Delta has placed passengers involved in incidents that targeted senators Mitt Romney and Lindsey Graham on its no-fly list."

The Facts

A video posted to Twitter on January 5 shows Romney sitting by himself in an airport, on his laptop. He was preparing to board a Delta flight from Salt Lake City to Washington, the Associated Press reported.

In the video, an unnamed individual recording approached Romney. As he noticed the person, Romney said, "Put your mask on," to which the individual responded, "Don't tell me what to do."

Then, the individual got even closer to Romney and was heard saying, "I want to have a chat with you...why aren't you supporting President Trump?"

Romney appeared to attempt to calmly respond to a barrage of questions.

"You were voted in as a conservative to represent the conservative constituents, period," the person said. Romney replied, "Actually, that's not how the Constitution works."

"It is, you're voted in to represent us, you work for us, am I wrong?" the person asked.

Romney, who apparently seemed to have had enough of the confrontation, got up from his chair to walk away.

The individual filming followed Romney to hurl insults as a second individual with a phone out approached to take part.

"You're a joke, an absolute joke, it's a disgusting shame," the first individual was heard saying.

Afterward, a second video emerged, showing passengers chanting "traitor" at Romney while on the flight.

Black confirmed to Newsweek that those identified as harassing Romney will be banned from flying on Delta indefinitely.

"We notified all the passengers who were impacted by the no-fly and have sent them direct letters," Black said.

A few days after the video of Romney's harassment occurred, a video of Graham being harassed in Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia, was posted by Politico reporter Daniel Lippman.

In the video, a growing crowd is seen shouting at Graham before breaking out in unison to yell that he is a "traitor."

A woman wearing an "I love Trump" shirt is seen screaming, "One day they will not be able to walk down the street...that day is today."

Delta has not banned those who harassed Graham because he was flying on a different airline that day, Black said.

The Ruling

Half true.

Delta Airlines permanently banned passengers involved in harassing Senator Romney in Salt Lake City International Airport. However, it did not ban those caught on video in Reagan National harassing Senator Graham because they were not flying on Delta that day.
