Disney Channel has announced the cancelation of its original series, Andi Mack.
According to Deadline, the show will return to the network on June 21 and air a new episode each week until the series finale on July 26.
Disney previewed Andi Mack's final set of episodes with a short trailer.
In its three-season run, Andi Mack garnered acclaim by showcasing progressive topics seldom seen on children's television including coming out of the closet, teen pregnancy and gun safety. The show was the first on the Disney Channel to feature an openly gay main character.
"Andi Mack was a labor of love for a room of impassioned, inventive writers, a talented and dedicated crew, and an extraordinary, miraculous cast who inspired us all," said series creator, Terri Minsky.
The cancelation prompted a wave of responses from Twitter users who adored the diverse voice Andi Mack brought to television.
Fans are currently attempting to save the show using the hashtags #saveandimack and #renewandimack.
Fans have also expressed as to what prompted the show's cancelation. Some suspect it was due to the December arrest of Stoney Westmoreland, the actor who once portrayed the titular character's grandfather. However, he was immediately fired from Andi Mack following his arrest.
According to some fans, there's also the possibility that Andi Mack was always intended to conclude with season three. Peyton Elizabeth Lee, who plays the titular character, posted a heartfelt farewell-esque post to Instagram when the show's third season finished filming in December.
In the post, Lee stated, "I could spend the rest of my life reminiscing about the last three years….." The tribute prompted certain media outlets to predict the show's end was nigh.
Lee's co-star, Joshua Rush, stated in a twitter thread, "..it started to become clear that we were nearing the end[of the series] as we shot the end of S3,"
After that sentiment, Rush showed gratitude for the time he spent with Andi Mack's cast and crew.
Andi Mack is currently Disney Channel's most-watched series and its highest-rated show among kids ages 6 to 14. During its run, the show received many accolades: a GLAAD Media Award, a Television Academy Honor, a U.S. Asia Institute honor, the Common Sense Media Seal for Quality Family Programming and a Peabody Award nomination.
Andi Mack will be available for streaming in its entirety on the upcoming Disney Plus service when it launches in November.
