'Fear the Walking Dead' Adds Austin Amelio's Dwight in Latest Crossover

Fear the Walking Dead is reportedly gearing up for another big crossover with its parent series. According to a report published by ComicBook.com, Austin Amelio's Dwight will soon be mixing it up with Morgan, Alicia and Strand.

Light on specifics, the report cites "multiple sources involved with the series" as its central source. The publication also points out that this news may have been teased by Walking Dead Chief Content Officer Scott Gimple at San Diego Comic-Con in July. Despite two massive time jumps at the start of Season 9, Gimple said "It does not [rule out more crossovers]. That's about all I got to say. It does not, but I wouldn't expect it all the time. Things could happen. You never know who might pop up on Fear the Walking Dead. That includes The Walking Dead and potentially people in the past from Fear the Walking Dead."

For fans of The Walking Dead, Dwight's fate remains one of the show's biggest mysteries. After being banished from Alexandria last season, he has not appeared once in the current crop of episodes. A crossover with Fear the Walking Dead would presumably fill in the narrative gaps between Dwight's departure and his former community's current battle against the Whisperers.

The reporting appears mostly solid, but most details about the potential for a Dwight crossover are still unclear. Fear the Walking Dead is expected to return to AMC later this year, but it's not explicitly stated that Dwight will be part of that upcoming season. It should also be noted that AMC executives have yet to officially comment on the news. For now this should probably be discussed as a rumor, but, given what Fear the Walking Dead has become, it's one that seems very plausible.

Over Fear's last two seasons, many of the show's central characters have been replaced to usher in the era of Morgan. A crossover to answer such a major plot point sounds exactly like something AMC would do to generate interest in a spinoff that's had trouble establishing its identity.

Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 is expected to air on AMC later this year. The Walking Dead Season 9 resumes Feb. 10.
