Season 1 of Showtime's gripping historical drama, The First Lady, aired its thrilling season finale on Sunday, June 19 and fans are already eager to know if there will be more to come.

The 10-part series, starred Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt, Viola Davis as Michelle Obama, and Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford, delving deep into the similarities and differences between three of America's First Ladies and their time living in the White House.

Will There be The First Lady Season 2 on Showtime?

The fate of The First Lady Season 2 is currently in the hands of Showtime.

At the moment, there has been no news on the show's future but it is still early days for details of The First Lady Season 2 to be announced. After all, the season finale has only just aired.

A renewal will depend on a whole host of factors including ratings, the decisions of the creative team behind the show and cast availability—to name a few.

With so many First Ladies throughout history, there is definitely scope for other stories to be told, putting the series in good stead for Season 2.

Season 1 of The First Lady focused on the lives of Eleanor Roosevelt (played by Gillian Anderson), First Lady from 1933 to 1945, Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer), who served as First Lady from 1974 until 1977 and Michelle Obama (Viola Davis), First Lady from 2009 until 2017. All three women lived and worked at the heart of the White House as their husbands held the position of President of the United States.

The show featured a star-studded cast, including O-T Fagbenle as Barack Obama, Dakota Fanning as Susan Ford, Lily Rabe as Lorena Hickok, Regina Taylor as Marian Shields Robinson, Kiefer Sutherland as Franklin D. Roosevelt and Aaron Eckhart as Gerald Ford.

From the outset, The First Lady was not billed as a "limited series" and instead was listed as an "anthology series," suggesting the door may remain open for future seasons.

However, there is the possibility that Season 1 of The First Lady may be the last fans see of Anderson, Davis and Pfeiffer, with Season 2 potentially featuring a whole host of other First Ladies.

With 46 presidents so far, there is no shortage of great stories, told from the perspective of the women at the center of the White House, to share.

Speaking at The First Lady's TCA (Television Critics Association) presentation ahead of the show's premiere in April 2022, executive producers Cathy Shulman and Susanne Bier teased which First Ladies they would like to focus on if Season 2 was given the green light.

Deadline reported Shulman and Bier shared viewers could see appearances from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Hillary Clinton, Melania Trump, Dolly Madison, Edith Wilson, Martha Washington and Rosalynn Carter in future seasons of the show.

Bier teased: "I would be very intrigued to depict Hillary Clinton because I think that her position was so complicated... I think that would be incredibly interesting."

Schulman added: "If we could figure out a way to do Jackie Kennedy that didn't tell the same old story again—particularly the latter part of her life—I'm fascinated by that."

History buffs will know, that Hillary Clinton's husband, Bill Clinton, was infamously impeached and was at the center of the Monica Lewinsky Affair. Hilary Clinton went on to serve as Secretary of State and in 2016 was in the running to become the first female President of the United States.

One thing is for sure, fans definitely want to see more of The First Lady in the future.

One tweeted: "I binged watched all of season 1 of "The First Lady" only to realize it's the only season thus far. So I'm going to need a season 2 ok @Showtime. Let's get on it! We've got a good thing going. Let's do all of the First Ladies. Good talk."

A second fan chimed in: "The First Lady needs season 2. The show was so good. #Showtime"

A third added: "The First Lady was an amazing series @Showtime I think season 2 should be Clinton, Kennedy/Nixon, and Madison/ Jefferson."

If The First Lady is given the green light for Season 2, following the release pattern of season 1, fans can expect the show to premiere in April 2023 at the earliest.

In the meantime, they will just have to sit tight for news on the show's fate.
