The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning on Tuesday for parts of southeastern Pennsylvania including Philadelphia. The warning was to remain in effect until around 8:15 p.m. local time.
"Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly in the areas of heaviest rain," the National Weather Service said.
Locations that could experience flooding included Philadelphia, Camden, Bensalem, Norristown, East Norriton, Yeadon, Doylestown, Conshohocken, Palmyra, Hatboro, Folcroft, Ambler, Swarthmore, Jenkintown, Narberth, Chalfont, East Landsdowne, Rockledge, Yardley and Newtown.
Authorities urged people in areas that could flood not to drive through flooded roads, as most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
Other parts of the northeast were experiencing severe rain and flooding on Tuesday, including New York and New Jersey. Flash flood warnings were also issued in the Bronx and Westchester, New York, as well as Bergen and Hudson Counties in New Jersey.
