What Is 'Foolproof' and Why Is It the Only Movie on This Streaming Service?

Move over Disney+ and Netflix, Ryan Reynolds just launched a brand new streaming service to help promote the mobile wireless company Mint Mobile. There's a catch, though: The free service is only streaming Reynolds' 2003 action-comedy Foolproof.

For those who haven't seen Foolproof, it's written and directed by William Phillips and stars the Deadpool actor, with actors Kristin Booth and Joris Jarsky in supporting roles. Reynolds plays Kevin, who, along with his friends Sam and Rob (Booth and Jarsky, respectively), plays a game in which they simulate heists. The three are eventually blackmailed by a criminal to perform a real-life multi-million dollar heist for him, because of course that's what would happen in this sort of movie. If all that sounds just fine to you, then you're right: The movie currently has a 63 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which sounds just fine.

The new streaming site is called Mint Mobile+ and is a spinoff of Mint Mobile, a mobile wireless company that Reynolds purchased an ownership stake in back in November 2019. On Wednesday, Reynolds tweeted that "Every tech company needs a streaming service," which was why he launched this parody service.

The trailer for Mint Mobile+ features spliced-in footage from Foolproof and boasts that fans can "Binge over 80 minutes of Ryan Reynolds in one bingetastic place, all streaming in 2003 DVD quality."

With a layout very similar to the Disney+ site, Foolproof stands out as the only option to stream, no matter where you look. It holds every spot in the Mint Mobile+ top 10 films, and also falls under the following categories: "Original Originals," "Kind of Originals" and "Unoriginal Originals." Reynolds' face appears in the upper right hand corner of the browser, where one would typically expect to find their online avatar.

Unfortunately, it appears the film will only be available for a short time, so if you're looking to relive a very forgettable movie from the early 2000s, you better hop to it quickly. "Two minutes after launch and our crack data team has already determined Mint Mobile+ should probably be shut down by the weekend," Reynolds wrote on Twitter, noting that the company would stick to providing wireless coverage.

On Twitter, fans of Foolproof—yes, there are some—raved about having a place to stream the movie online. Others sought Easter Eggs to other Reynolds movies, like one person who said that the dot arching over the Mint Mobile+ logo belonged to The Green Lantern, who Reynolds played in the 2011 disaster of the same name.

The mobile provider obviously has a sense of humor, especially about having Reynolds as an owner. On its website, it features a quote from Reynolds poking fun at him having an ownership stake in the company. "While every other tech titan is off chasing rockets, I'll corner the budget-friendly wireless sector. Like most people, I only use rockets 10-12 times a year but I use my mobile service every day," he said.

Reynolds' publicist did not respond to Newsweek's request for comment in time for publication.
