Watch: Fox Business Promotes Bulletproof Backpacks by Playing La Roux's Pop Song 'Bulletproof'

Fox Business began a segment about bulletproof backpacks for schoolchildren Monday by playing La Roux's upbeat pop song "Bulletproof." Host Maria Bartiromo was joined on her show by the maker of "high-end bulletproof backpacks," who said that the products were a necessary response to the epidemic of school shootings in the United States.

But the seriousness of the topic matter was not clear from the choice of song that introduced it. Released in 2009, La Roux's "Bulletproof" is about overcoming the end of a romantic relationship. The song played over close-up images of the backpacks.

"Back-to-school backpacks taking on all-new meaning this morning," Bartiromo said as she began the segment.

In a statement to Newsweek, a Fox Business Network spokesperson said: "The song was chosen by the production team and the selection has been addressed."

The host then inquired as to why manufacturer MC Armor had brought the product to the United States.

"In the U.S., sadly, there's the guns, everybody can have a gun," Carolina Ballesteros Casas responded. "So, here, kids need to be protected, and we have the fact that there is some school issues, so we need to bring this to the United States."

After being told that the ballistic plate in the backpack could also be used as a shield, Bartiromo said, "It's incredible that this has come to this, though, that we need bulletproof clothing."

Recent years have seen a rise in high profile school shootings, including February's attack at a high school in Parkland, Florida, in which 17 students and staff members were killed. Despite pressure from the student survivors in Parkland and from Democrats, little tangible progress has been made on enacting stricter gun control measures. Following the shooting, President Donald Trump suggested that arming teachers was one possible solution.

After a brief discussion about the reasons behind producing bulletproof backpacks for schoolchildren, the fashion value of the products were highlighted.

"Fashion with ballistics," was how Casas described her company's products.

Bartiromo, meanwhile, picked up one of the backpacks and said it "doesn't even feel like it's heavier than a regular backpack," adding that "some of these things, though, are quite fashion forward."

The segment also featured clothing items, including jackets. "This looks like a very fashionable jacket," said Bartiromo of one of them.

This story has been updated with a statement from a Fox Business Network spokesperson.
