George Clooney is not only an Academy Award-winning actor, director and activist, he is also the most beautiful man in the world. That is, according to a study using the ancient Greek formula called the golden ratio.

Mathematically speaking, the golden ratio, represented by the number 1.618 or the Greek letter for "phi," occurs when the summation of two quantities is equal to the ratio of the quantity as a whole. It may have been used in architecture and art to create what was believed to be the most aesthetically pleasing designs that exhibited perfect symmetry. It also has been applied to measuring beauty in humans.

Using computer facial mapping technology, a London cosmetic surgeon measured the proportions of Clooney's face—including his eyes, nose, jawline and chin—and calculated its proximity to the golden ratio sweet spot.

The Money Monster actor's face was determined to be a 91.86 percent match to the 1.618 ratio, according to Dr. Julian De Silva, a Harley Street clinician.

"He has beautiful facial symmetry and gets closer than any other man to having what the Greeks considered the perfect face," De Silva is quoted by MailOnline as saying.

"George had a near perfect ratio of nose-to-lip dimension of 99.6 per cent, and his chin and eye spacing were almost perfect as well. Across the 12 key markers, he had the highest combined score."

Clooney is closely followed by American Hustle star Bradley Cooper, who measured 91.80 percent accuracy to the ratio, and Brad Pitt, who was a 90.50 percent match.

Clooney, 56, has twice been named People magazine's sexiest man alive: in 1997, at the height of his E.R. fame, and again in 2006, after making the transition to Hollywood.

Former One Direction singers Harry Styles (89.63 percent) and Zayn Malik (86.5 percent) also ranked in the top 10 most beautiful men based on their proximity to the golden ratio.

According to De Silva's analysis, the most beautiful men are:

  1. George Clooney — 91.86%
  2. Bradley Cooper — 91.80%
  3. Brad Pitt — 90.51%
  4. Harry Styles — 89.63%
  5. David Beckham — 88.96%
  6. Will Smith — 88.88%
  7. Idris Elba — 87.93%
  8. Ryan Gosling — 87.48%
  9. Zayn Malik — 86.5%
  10. Jamie Foxx — 85.46
