The life of President George H.W. Bush was honored on Friday with a state funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. A number of dignitaries were in attendance, including President Trump and the four living ex-presidents—Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama—as well as German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Prince Charles. The service is one of many honoring the former president.

Breaking from custom, the current president, Donald Trump, did not speak, per the wishes of the Bush family. Instead, Bush's son, former President George W. Bush, offered a eulogy for his father.

"When the history books are written, they will say that George H.W. Bush was a great president of the United States, a diplomat of unmatched skill, a commander-in-chief of formidable accomplishment, and a gentleman who executed the duties of his office with dignity and honor," Bush said.

Towards the end of his eulogy, Bush became visibly emotional.

"Through our tears, let us know the blessings of knowing and loving you, a great and noble man. The best father a son or daughter could have," said George W. Bush, holding back tears. "And in our grief, let us smile knowing that dad is hugging Robin and holding Mom's hand again."

George H.W. and Barbara Bush's daughter, Robin, died of cancer in 1953.

President from 1989 to 1993, George H.W. passed away at his home in Houston last Friday, just seven months after the passing of his wife Barbara Bush, in April of this year.

Immediately following the funeral service in Washington, D.C. the casket of the former president received a 21-gun salute before boarding a U.S. Air Force 747—called 'Special Mission 41' in honor of the 41st president. The casket was then flown to Houston to lie in repose before burial at his presidential library next to his daughter Robin and his wife Barbara.
