Georgia Aquarium Animals to Debut in New 'Animal Planet' Series

The Animal Planet cable TV channel and the Georgia Aquarium are working together swimmingly to educate viewers on the lives of aquatic creatures, their caretakers and the efforts to protect the various species.

From the production crew that brought animal lovers the network's smash hit, The Zoo, arrives The Aquarium, the tentatively titled new show that will premiere sometime later in 2019.

On Friday, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the production team Left/Right, a part of Red Arrow Entertainment Group and Copper Pot Pictures productions, will forge ahead for a behind-the-scenes, in-depth look at the Georgia Aquarium.

Among the series objectives is Georgia Aquarium's ongoing efforts to protect aquatic species in nature, their natural habitats outside of an aquarium, according to Susanna Dinnage, Animal Planet global president.

"The Georgia Aquarium is home to an incredible array of animals and aquatic creatures and is also dedicated to many global conservation initiatives," Dinnage told The Hollywood Reporter. "We are delighted to be partnering with the team at the aquarium to bring viewers up-close to a wide range of unusual and very special animals in this all-access series."

Animal Planet will have "unprecedented access to the inner workings" of what is reportedly the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere.

The series will focus on how George Aquarium's caretakers and employees care for thousands of animals and the bonds forged between the staff and animals.

Starring rescued Southern sea otters, California sea lions, whale sharks, manta rays and endangered African penguins, the new show reveals what it's like for creatures and humans to co-exist in a protected environment.

The aquarium biologists, researchers and trainers share with the cameras their day-to-day duties. The aquarium is comprised of 10 million gallons of fresh water and salt water filtered hourly, 70 miles of piping and a specialized lighting system that simulates natural day and night cycles for various species.

Some staff is on duty 24-hours a day, so to say the humans in The Aquarium absorb themselves in their work is spot-on.

"For years, Animal Planet has been bringing their audiences closer to some of the globe's most interesting animals and fostering a connection to our natural world—which is exactly what Georgia Aquarium aims to do every day. Animal Planet is the perfect home for this new, aquarium-focused series because we share the same mission to inspire and educate about not just aquatic animals, but the environments they inhabit," said spokeswoman Jessica Fontana of the Georgia Aquarium.

For a quick peek preview-of-sorts, the Georgia Aquarium Facebook page includes a post promoting some of the animals supposedly predicting "Early MVP predictions for the Big Game," in advance of Sunday's Super Bowl 53, which will be in Atlanta.

The Zoo has been renewed for a third season, much to the delight of fans – and producers hope The Aquarium has the same kind of success.

"We are so proud to be a part of this series and cannot wait to show all of the hard work and dedication that goes not only into caring for thousands of animals," added Fontana about the new series, "but also the animals in the ocean that desperately need our help."

The Zoo is set in the Bronx Zoo and gives viewers a close-up, behind-the-scenes view of the organization. You can stream the series.

"It's great to see the animals from around the world in their own environment and not in cages," wrote zoo-goer Marian Pastor on the Bronx Zoo Facebook page after a recent visit in January. "I love watching the show on TV called The Zoo on Animal Planet. It's amazing to see how they take care of the animals."
