Gillian Anderson's Shocking Golden Globes Dress Prompts Debate

Gillian Anderson made quite a fashion statement when she appeared at the 2024 Golden Globes.

The 55-year-old The Crown and Sex Education star stepped onto the red carpet in a custom ivory strapless gown that she revealed was embroidered with female anatomy. According to Anderson, each motif on the dress took 3 1/2 hours to embroider. She finished the look with a chrome Aquazzura handbag and Chopard jewelry.

"My dress was designed by Gabriela Hearst and it has vaginas on it," the actor told Deadline on the night. She chose the dress "for so many reasons," adding: "It's brand appropriate."

When Anderson spoke with ExtraTV, she said the gown was a collaboration between her alternative wellness brand, G Spot, and Hearst.

"The dress has yonis, if you'd like to pan down, there are so many yonis...it's about 150 hours of embroidery," she explained.

Anderson went into further detail about her dress choice in a statement to Newsweek. She said: "My Instagram presence has been highlighting yonis since Sex Education landed on Netflix and with the brand mantra of G Spot being to 'prioritize pleasure' I wanted to bring this element into part of the design. I have worked closely with long-time friend Gabriela for both GH and Chloe in the past and she has joined G Spot as an investor and advisor. It feels like the perfect collaboration and representation of exploring pleasure and personal power."

Her dress choice also comes 18 months after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which has had a domino effect in the United States. Women and girls are facing increasing restrictions on their rights as the Supreme Court and multiple states have moved to ban or heavily restrict access to legal abortions.

Anderson's choice of dress has resulted in a debate taking place on X, formerly Twitter. Many people shared their love for the actor and her outfit, highlighting how much they approve of the embroidery.

One such person who sang Anderson's praise was social media star Mia Khalifa, who urged followers to "zoom in on the dress."

"Gillian Anderson looks STUNNING in this dress, and if you look closely, you might see there's something else there I can't quite put my finger in—I mean on," another X user posted.

"Are those vulvas on Gillian Anderson's dress... I love her so much," said another.

A fourth person described Anderson as the "love of my life" while praising the dress.

However, not everyone was impressed by Anderson's choice of gown.

"Ridiculous, Pathetic. A complete joke. Oh, and...NO ONE CARES," one person posted to X.

"Washed up has-been. Hasn't been relevant since X-Files," wrote another.

"I am sure glad her peasants spent 150 hours embroidering her (whatever she called it) so she could make a statement," a different X user commented.

Another added: "Classless and tasteless."

This comes after Anderson hosted a G Spot x Wellbeing of Women Art of Pleasure event at the Soho Revue Gallery in London in December. The occasion celebrated Gillian's wellness brand's partnership with Wellbeing of Women, which is a health charity focused on improving women's gynecological and reproductive health.

Per the Daily Mail, the actor explained at the event that she developed G Spot as "a new and unconventional way of framing the wellness industry that was about self-expression and not shame."

She went on to say that the main purpose of the brand is to encourage female pleasure. "If you can imagine if women could take the time to actually prioritize their needs how different the world would look," she said. "There would be more energy, more inspiration, more positivity and more capacity to pass that on and be of service to others."

Christopher Nolan's film Oppenheimer and HBO's Succession were the big winners at the 2024 Golden Globes.
