The 5 Biggest Shocks From The 2022 Golden Globes

The 2022 Golden Globes may have been a rather subdued affair and not broadcast, but it still featured plenty of drama when it came to the winners and losers of the awards.

It also proved to be a monumental occasion with some notable firsts for the ceremony that is trying to regain its reputation in Hollywood. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) hosted a scaled-back event which many celebrities and studios chose to boycott.

Despite the absence of the winners and nominees, some celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis spoke virtually at the event. A number of diverse voices were invited to speak at the ceremony too, as the HFPA attempted to rebuild bridges with the industry and the audience.

While all of that was going on in the background, there were still plenty of winners to celebrate at this year's awards. Here's the five biggest shocks from the 2022 Golden Globe Awards.

1. Nicole Kidman

One of the biggest upsets came in one of the major categories as Nicole Kidman beat fellow star names Kristen Stewart, Lady Gaga, Olivia Colman and Jessica Chastain to win Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama.

Stewart was the favorite in this category for her performance as Princess Diana in Spencer, while Colman was fancied too for her turn in Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Lost Daughter.

But it was Australian actress Kidman who came out on top for her performance as Lucille Ball in the comedy drama biopic Being the Ricardos.

2. The Power of the Dog

Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog was expected to do well but its level of success was unexpected at the 2022 Golden Globes.

The movie, a 1920s Western based on Thomas Savage's novel, won three prizes: Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Director for Campion, and Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for Kodi Smit-McPhee. Smit-McPhee spoke to Newsweek about his role in the movie and the awards season buzz when the movie launched on Netflix.

While The Power of the Dog did perform above expectations, Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst lost out in their respective acting categories. The movie also lost Best Original Score and Best Screenplay.

3. Mj Rodriguez

It was a memorable night for many reasons, but a monumental night for Mj Rodriguez who became the first transgender winner of a Golden Globe Award. She won Best Actress in a Drama Series for her performance as Blanca Rodriguez-Evangelista in the FX series Pose.

Those in the know may have anticipated the win for her magnificent performance in the series but Rodriguez still came out on top in a category that included Elisabeth Moss, Christine Baranski and Jennifer Aniston.

4. Hacks

The sitcom Ted Lasso has seemed unstoppable over the past year at award ceremonies, until Hacks stepped up to the plate at the 2022 Golden Globes. The HBO Max comedy won Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy, beating the bookies' favorite Ted Lasso as well as The Great, Only Murders in the Building and Reservation Dogs.

As well as the win for the series, Jean Smart won Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy. She beat her co-star Hannah Einbinder in the same category.

5. O Yeong-su

Anyone who has been online over the past year won't be surprised to see that Squid Game won an award at the 2022 Golden Globes. With three nominations in total, the prize Squid Game actually won may come as a shock.

O Yeong-su played the old man Oh Il-nam in the show, and won the Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film. He beat three-time nominee Kieran Culkin, Emmy Award-winner Brett Goldstein and The Morning Show duo Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass. Unfortunately Squid Game lost Best Television Series - Drama to Succession, and lead actor Lee Jung-jae lost out to Jeremy Strong in the Best Performance in a Television Series - Drama.
