Golden Globe Nominations 2018 Snubs: Jordan Peele, 'Stranger Things' and More

If the Golden Globes nominations are being announced, you know there will be puzzlers and slights galore. And that held true when this year's list of nominees were revealed early Monday morning on NBC by Alfre Woodard, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Bell and Sharon Stone.

Many of the expected contenders got nominations: Big Little Lies and The Post both came away with six nominations and Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water got seven. With movies and TV divided into drama and musical or comedy, there's more wealth to spread around in the acting categories, but also more opportunity for head scratchers

Will & Grace surprisingly came away with two nominations (for Best Television Series—Musical or Comedy, and Best Performance By An Actor for Eric McCormack), despite the reboot series' lukewarm critical reception this year. The hit Netflix series Stranger Things also picked up two nominations—Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for David Harbour. But the young stars, the very reason people watch the show, were ignored.

Meanwhile, the critically acclaimed The Good Place got zip, which was awkward for its star, Bell, who was a presenter for the nominations. But she wasn't alone. Laura Linney didn't get nominated for the dark thriller Ozark, though her co-star, Jason Bateman, did.

Good surprises include The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, from Gilmore Girls' creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, which netted two nominations—impressive given the Amazon show is just one season deep—and Katherine Langford, the 21-year-old star of the teen drama 13 Reasons Why, who scored a nod for best actress.

And then there are the oddball choices that always crop up at the Golden Globes. This year, the most puzzling nominee is Jane Campion's critically-slammed Sundance Channel series Top of the Lake: China Girl, which was nominated in the Best Limited Series or Motion Picture made for Television category.

There were plenty of shockers in the film categories, too. Get Out and Lady Bird each received nominations for Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy, yet Jordan Peele and Greta Gerwig received nothing for their acclaimed directorial debuts. And 7-year-old Brooklyn Prince, who broke out so spectacularly inThe Florida Project, was also overlooked. (Her co-star, Willem Dafoe, was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.)

The Hollywood Foreign Press, a non-profit organization of entertainment journalist, awards the Golden Globes. It tends to play favorites while not paying as close attention to box office success as the Oscars, which might explain the curious nominations for Judi Dench for Victoria & Abdul, Helen Mirren for The Leisure Seeker and Hugh Jackman for The Greatest Showman (also nominated for Best Picture—Musical or Comedy).

On the other hand, the Foreign Press is also known for making smart discoveries and championing young talent (see Lena Dunham and Girls). That's lucky for Ansel Elgort, the charming getaway driver in Edgar's Wright's caper comedy Baby Driver, who fusty Oscar likely won't notice.

The 75th Annual Golden Globes, hosted by Seth Meyers, will air on January 7 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. The network will also air a 75th anniversary special on December 13 at 9 p.m. ET hosted by Will & Grace stars Debra Messing and Eric McCormack—and suddenly the sitcom's two Golden Globe nominations suddenly make a lot more sense.
