Golden Retriever Takes a Nap by Staircase, You Can Guess What Happens Next

The moment a golden retriever took an accidental tumble down a set of stairs has gained serious viral attention—and thankfully the dog is just fine.

In a video posted on TikTok by @haleymarienelson, the home security camera footage showed the moment the big dog was sleeping at the edge of the top of the staircase when she stretched and lost her balance, tumbling down the stairs.

Thankfully, the pup swiftly recovered, trotting back up the stairs with her tail wagging.

Poster Haley reassured concerned viewers by saying that the dog emerged from the incident unscathed. "My poor dog this morning," she said in the caption, before later adding: "She's okay!!!"

The video sparked a flurry of comments from viewers that were somewhere between amused and concerned.

"Omg poor baby is she ok?" said viewer Olivia, to which the owner promptly replied: "Yes she's okay and getting extra love."

TikToker Brenan laughed: "That is such a golden retriever thing to do lol." While Dulce was amused by the dog's reaction to the fall: "The way she barked softly after like 'these damn stairs' lol... Poor baby."

The viral video prompted some viewers to relate. "I wish I could show my dog this video because I always move him when he sleeps on edges and he gets so mad at me," said another commenter.

This isn't the first time a dog's sleeping arrangement has prompted laughter. One dog fell asleep on a footstool with his paw hanging off the edge. While Wren the greyhound left people baffled with her unusual sleeping position. In a video that went viral on TikTok, Wren was seen sleeping with her head just off the edge of the canvas in what was dubbed an "invisible pillow."

Different dog sleeping positions can tell you more than you might think—often offering insight into their trust levels, familiarity with the environment and comfort.

Dogs spend as much of half of their day asleep, and veterinarian Dr. Jerry Klein, the chief veterinary officer at American Kennel Club (AKC), previously told Newsweek that dog sleeping positions are "interesting to understand as they shed a little light into their behavior and much of it is inherited from their more primitive canine ancestors."

Dogs curled in a ball with legs tucked in may be more anxious and conscious of protecting themselves, while a pup sleeping on their side—like in the video—is a sign that it is comfortable in its surroundings and feels safe.

A dog that sleeps with its stomach exposed shows that it is very relaxed and feels unthreatened by the environment.
