Good Burger devotees aren't the only ones nostalgic for a return to the '90s as Nickelodeon alum's Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell have expressed their interest in revisiting the classic film.
TMZ spoke with Mitchell, 40, on Tuesday outside of A Simple Bar in Los Angeles about whether or not he'd be on board to star in Good Burger sequel. He, in turn, said he was "down" to reprise his role of Ed alongside Thompson's character Dexter.
"The conversations have already started. Definitely down," Mitchell told TMZ. "We've talked. We had meetings."
TMZ then questioned Mitchell about whether there was pushback from Nickeldoen that has delayed a revisitation of the '90s flick from occurring. "Yeah, you know, we gonna let them work it out. But all you need to know is that Kenan and I down," he said.
"When we did the Fallon [The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon] reunion, that was awesome, bro, and just the fans how they enjoyed it," Mitchell continued, describing what started initial talks for a sequel. "So, we were like, we definitely got to do something again."
Thompson shared his interest in returning to Good Burger during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on December 6. The 40-year-old Saturday Night Live star explained how a sequel had been in talks "for a long time." While there have been meetings about revisiting the film, he suggested the sequel's fate is "in the higher powers's hands."
Dan Schneider, a TV producer behind Nickelodeon titles like iCarly and Drake & Josh, was responsible for Thompson and Mitchell reconnecting ahead of their mini Good Burger reunion on The Tonight Show.
"A friend of his was working on The Tonight Show and they had that idea to do the reunion and he reached out to me and then I called Kel and we talked," Thompson explained to host Andy Cohen. "We played phone tag for three days, but we finally talked and we were like, 'Yeah, we might as well do it' or whatever. It was a nice 40-minute conversation that we had."
While Thompson claimed the pair now talk "all the time," it had been a while since they had been in touch. "We hadn't spoken in a long time. It was nice to reconnect because it was like picking up right where we left off," he said.
Good Burger originally surfaced as a sketch on Nickelodeon's All That, but it was later developed into a feature-length film in 1997. It was directed by Brian Robbins and written by Schneider, Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert. The film follows Dexter (Thompson) and Ed (Mithcell) as they try to save their fast food joint when Mondo Burger opens up across the street.
