New Google Doodle: Who Was Selena Quintanilla? Everything You Need to Know About Queen of Tejano Music

If you happen to be using Google search Tuesday, you might find yourself singing along to "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom." That's because today's Google Doodle celebrates the late singer Selena Quintanilla.

Google has unveiled a 90-second animated Doodle of Quintanilla—who released music mononymously as Selena—singing her 1994 hit.

Quintanilla became synonymous with Tejano music, a blend of Texan and Mexican styles, and released five albums in total. Her first self-titled record was released October 17, 1989. Her final album, Dreaming of You, was released posthumously in July 1995 and became her first No.1 on the Billboard 200.

Quintanilla was shot dead in March 1995 by Yolanda Saldivar, the president of her official fan club, who was fired after it was discovered she had embezzled money from the singer's business.

Tuesday's Google Doodle was conceived by Perla Campos, Google's marketing lead for its daily Doodles. In a blog post, Campos, who, like Quintanilla, grew up in a Mexican household in Texas, said: "As the daughter of a Mexican immigrant single mom living in a small (primarily white) town in rural Texas, I was one of the people Selena and her legacy profoundly influenced. My love of music started with her. One of my dearest childhood memories is of my mom and I belting 'Bidi Bidi Bom Bom' and 'Techno Cumbia' in the family van during our annual road trips to Mexico."

Google had support from Quintanilla's family in creating the Google Doodle. Her sister, Suzette, said: "This project is just yet another testament to the power of Selena's legacy, which is still going strong 22 years later. Selena has always transcended cultural boundaries and having this Doodle featuring a strong, Latina woman on the homepage of Google around the world is a perfect example [of] that."

As well as the Doodle, Google has also created an interactive online art exhibition that showcases some of Quintanilla's possessions, including stage outfits, her red Porsche and the Grammy she received in 1994 for best Mexican-American album.

Quintanilla was played by Jennifer Lopez in a 1997 biopic about her rise to fame and her death. Another famous Selena, singer and actor Selena Gomez, who was born in 1992, was named after Quintanilla.
