Exit polls show that three quarters of Republican voters in South Carolina favor temporarily barring Muslims who are not U.S. citizens from entering the country, ABC News reports .
Results from the South Carolina Republican primary were still coming in Saturday, but Donald Trump, who has called for such a ban on Muslims entering the country, is expected to win the state.
On Friday, Trump recalled an apocryphal tale of General John Pershing, who led the U.S. occupation of the Philippines in the early 20th century. Pershing, Trump asserted, ordered his troops to coat their bullets in pigs' blood, a tactic designed to terrify Muslim insurgents fighting against the United States. Pigs are considered unclean by most Muslim sects. There is no hard evidence the incident Trump recounted ever occurred.
The same exit polls show 65 percent of GOP voters identify as evangelical Christians. Around 40 percent favor deporting undocumented immigrants.
On the Democratic side, meanwhile, actress America Ferrera tweeted that supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders chanted "English only" when an interpreter attempted to translate caucus instructions into Spanish at a voting site in Nevada on Saturday.
