Greg Abbott Celebrates Catholic Nun Calling Biden 'Evil'

Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Monday shared a video of a Catholic nun calling President Joe Biden "evil," applauding her for "sharing the truth."

Abbott, a Republican who has served as Texas governor since 2015, has in recent years become an outspoken critic of Biden and his presidency. The two leaders have particularly clashed on border security, with Abbott echoing the sentiments of many Republicans, calling recent surges in migrant crossings over the U.S.-Mexico border an "invasion" and lambasted Biden's policies surrounding it.

On Monday, Abbott took the feud a step further when he shared a clip of a Catholic nun, Mother Miriam, in which she called Biden "evil," while supporting the reelection of former President Donald Trump in November. She also backed initiatives to bar non-citizens from voting in U.S. elections, a talking point Abbott intensified amid debates surrounding border security. In a post to X, formerly Twitter, Abbott called the nun's message "the truth."

"Catholic Nun sharing the truth," Abbott's post read. "Calls Biden inept and evil. Says it would be an act of God to elect Trump. Says voting should be limited to citizens."

The clip originates from a video in the nun's Mother Miriam Live series, broadcast to Facebook on March 6. She reads a letter bemoaning how, in an election year, governments no longer "serve God or the people." She interrupts her reading at one point to say that if Trump is reelected, it would be, in her view, "a complete act of God."

"If Biden is not reelected, it is a complete act of God, because every scheme and every evil is out there that he would continue to be our president as inept and evil as he is," she says in the video. "And those that surround him and advise him and even direct him … the devil is wise. And I would not put it past them to do anything."

She then goes on to voice support for proposed bills that would bar individuals who cannot prove U.S. citizenship from voting. Republicans have long accused Democrats of supporting the rights of undocumented immigrants as part of a scheme to cultivate them as Democratic voters. However, as highlighted by USA.gov, non-citizens are already ineligible to participate in elections, with exceptions only available for local-level elections in certain areas.

Newsweek reached out to the White House press office via email for comment on Monday afternoon.

While Trump, the presumptive 2024 GOP presidential nominee, has received notable support from Christians, his past behaviors and some allegations against him have also led to criticism from Christian voices. He was been found liable of sexual abuse in the civil defamation trial brought by E. Jean Carroll, and has been accused of having an extramarital affair with adult-film star Stormy Daniels in 2006. He has most recently been accused of exploiting Christianity through his endorsement of a $59.99 Bible, for which he receives royalties.
