Meredith will be dating in Grey's Anatomy Season 15, showrunner Krista Vernoff told TVLine Wednesday.
"Meredith [is going to] have a new trajectory that is more focused on who she is as a single mother and surgeon," ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey told the publication Tuesday. "Ellen has spoken very loudly about how she doesn't want all of Meredith's adventures to be romantic ones. … I think we'll get there [eventually]."
"The ink wasn't even dry on [Patrick Dempsey's] exit papers before they rushed in a new guy," Ellen Pompeo told The Hollywood Reporter in January. "They're calling me, going, 'What do you think of this guy?' … And they're sending pictures. I was like, 'Are you people f***ing nuts? Why do you feel that you have to replace this person?'"
Pompeo's character, Meredith, lost her husband and the father of her children, Derek Shepherd (Dempsey) in Season 11 in 2015. She had a brief relationship with Martin Henderson's Nathan in Season 13, "but they didn't love the storyline, so that ended," the actor said to the publication.
It seems Grey's Anatomy is going to give a romantic storyline another try for Meredith Grey, as Vernoff said she "is very much a part of our Season of Love," TVLine reported. The Season of Love is the medical drama's theme this year. "The one-two punch of meeting [Scott Speedman's] Nick Marsh awoke a desire in her that she can't put back to sleep," the showrunner continued, stating the question for Season 15 for Meredith is, "With whom will she find love?'"
Any fans hoping to see Speedman return after noticing the chemistry between his and Pompeo's characters in Season 14's "One Day Like This" may be out of luck. "Nick was designed as a one episode guest star, which is the whole reason Scott agreed to come play him," Vernoff said to the publication.
Meredith's love life isn't the only one with a question mark next to it for Season 15. Kim Raver returned as Teddy in the Season 14 finale and is once again a series regular. She's pregnant with Owen's (Kevin McKidd) child and that lets fans "understand the love relationship" between those two characters, the actor told TVLine Tuesday. Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) makes that "complicated," she added. Owen and Amelia might not have been together when Season 14 ended, but there was a set-up for a potential reunion.
The two-hour Grey's Anatomy Season 15 premiere airs Thursday, September 27, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
