Lin-Manuel Miranda's hit Broadway musical Hamilton has broken a record for the most Tony nods one show has ever garnered. The nominations were announced at a ceremony Tuesday morning by Tony Award-winning actress Nikki M. James and Tony Award nominee Andrew Rannells.
With 16 nominations, Hamilton beats out the previous record-holding musicals—The Producers and Billy Elliot (2009)—which each received 15 nominations. The former also holds the record as the musical production that has won the most Tonys, taking home a dozen awards.
Though several other musicals and plays received an impressive number of nominations, none came close to Hamilton. The musicals Shuffle Along, or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed and She Loves Me received 10 and eight nominations, respectively, while the highest number of nods among plays went to Long Day's Journey Into Night, with seven, and Eclipsed and The Humans, with six each.
This year's awards ceremony, to be held at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on June 12, will be hosted by Tony winner and Late Late Show host James Corden and broadcast live on CBS.
