'Hamilton': The Disney+ Version of the Musical Will Have Two Major Edits

Hamilton is probably Disney+'s most-anticipated release since The Mandalorian, with the millions who have been unable to watch the show on Broadway able to stream the musical from Friday, July 3. Though the filmed version of Hamilton, which features the original cast and was shot over multiple performances, tries to be as faithful to the theatrical version, creator Lin-Manuel Miranda had to make one major change to get it onto Disney+.

Asked by a Twitter follower if there are any changes in the Disney+ version of Hamilton, Miranda said: "LANGUAGE!

"1. On July 3, you're getting the whole show, every note & scene, & a 1-minute countdown clock during intermission (bathroom!)
2. But MPAA has a hard rule about language: more than 1 utterance of "F***" is an automatic R rating. We have 3 "F***" in our show."

In a follow-up tweet, he revealed exactly which f-words were cut to keep a PG-13 rating:

• In "Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)," the f-bomb in Mulligan's (played by Okieriete Onaodowan) "When you knock me down I get the f*** back up again!" has been muted.
• In "Washington on Your Side," the line "Southern motherf*****'— Democratic-Republicans!" will feature a record scratch to mask its curse word.

Miranda joked about this: "I literally gave two f**** so the kids could see it." The f-word that Miranda has kept it seems is in "The Adams Administration," in which John Adams is called a "motherf***stick." The "my wife decided to fuuuuu..." part of "Say No To This" will also remain unedited.

Miranda also confirmed the rest of the swearing remains, including multiples uses of "s***," "ass," "whore" and "bastard".

Though this may be more swear words than some may expect from a PG-13, this may be down to an MPAA rule that allows for exceptions to be made. The organization's guidelines read in part: "A motion picture's single use of one of the harsher sexually-derived words, though only as an expletive, initially requires at least a PG-13 rating. More than one such expletive requires an R rating, as must even one of those words used in a sexual context. The Rating Board nevertheless may rate such a motion picture PG-13 if, based on a special vote by a two-thirds majority, the Raters feel that most American parents would believe that a PG-13 rating is appropriate because of the context or manner in which the words are used or because the use of those words in the motion picture is inconspicuous."

Hamilton is released on Disney+ on Friday, July 3.
