Heartbreak at What Dog Does the Night After Golden Retriever Brother Dies

Hearts have broken online for a dog who displayed his grief after losing his best friend.

In a January clip on TikTok, Milo was caught on camera letting out a heart-wrenching howl after the loss of his friend Toby. The grieving dog's owner shared the video on their TikTok @miloman4prez where it has been viewed more than 3.7 million times.

Speaking of the bond between the pair, the owner wrote: "Toby was there the day we brought Milo home. They were inseparable, and Milo was heartbroken (as we all were)." A further comment read: "Don't ever underestimate how deeply our pets love."

"Grief affects our pets just as much as it does us," dog behavior expert Lorna Winter previously told Newsweek.

Winter stressed the importance of supporting your pets through grief, with strategies including extra affection and distraction. Engaging in play, exercise and positive reinforcement can all life their spirits.

If you dog's behavior changes drastically, or they stop eating or drinking, it is a good idea to consult a veterinarian to ensure that nothing else is wrong. The experts may also be able to provide extra advice or prescribe medications to help ease anxiety or depression.

The video struck a chord with millions of animal lovers, and it prompted more than 15,600 comments.

"His heart is broke and he is calling him," posted one commenter, while another wrote: "He is calling for his friend, he doesn't understand that his friend is gone."

Others shared their condolences, like one commenter who added: "So sorry for your loss, poor baby."

This isn't the first time that animal heartbreak has tugged at heartstrings online; cockapoo Bobby was left heartbroken when his best friend, a hamster named Barry, died.

Another viral video showed a confused dog who was heartbroken after seeing his owners arrive home from the vet without his 15-year-old brother.

"I'll never understand how people believe they don't feel as we do," posted another viewer of the Milo video.

"I can't like this clip," wrote another commenter. "It feels wrong to put a love heart against something so tragic. I am so sad for you and this poor baby."

In a follow-up video just over a month later, the poster updated followers to let them know how Milo was getting on.

"He's doing much better. We've included him more in our daily outings as well as some vacations and he's loving it," said @miloman4prez on TikTok.
