Lin-Manuel Miranda's first Broadway musical In The Heights has been adapted for the big screen but you'll also have the opportunity to watch it at home too.
Miranda achieved international fame for his stage phenomenon Hamilton, but In The Heights was actually his debut effort. Set in a largely Dominican neighborhood in Washington Heights, New York City, the story follows a bodega owner who saves money in hope of a better life.
The movie-version of the Tony Award-winning musical which stars Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins and Miranda himself, was supposed to release in summer 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, In The Heights is finally now out in theaters and available on HBO Max now.
How to watch In The Heights online
HBO Max subscribers will be able to watch In The Heights for free online now. The movie is available to watch on the streaming platform for 30 days after its release on June 10, 2021.
Currently it costs $14.99 a month to get an ad-free HBO Max subscription. There is a cheaper alternative that can save you five dollars a month too. For $9.99 a month you get access to all of the platform's movies and TV shows but this will include ads too.
HBO Max no longer offers a free trial to new subscribers but there is a way around this. New and existing Hulu customers can to add on HBO Max as an additional service. This subscription comes with a one month free trial.
HBO Max is only available to customers inside the United States and legally cannot be accessed by anyone outside of the country.
All Warner Bros. movies are getting a dual release this year, appearing in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day. Upcoming releases later this year include Space Jam: A New Legacy, The Suicide Squad, Dune and The Matrix 4.
In The Heights was Lin-Manuel Miranda's first musical he performed on Broadway. It was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards, winning four including Best Musical. Miranda played Usnavi de la Vega, a major character in the stage version, but he'll play the smaller role of the Piragua Guy in the movie.
The film is directed by Jon M. Chu whose previous work includes other dance and musical films such as Step Up 2: The Streets, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never as well as Crazy Rich Asians. He's also lined up to direct a movie adaptation of the musical Wicked as reported by Deadline.
