Man Shouted 'Heil Hitler, Heil Trump' During Intermission of 'Fiddler on the Roof'

A man yelled "Heil Hitler, Heil Trump," during a performance of "Fiddler on the Roof" in Baltimore, Maryland, on Wednesday night.

Audience members told The Baltimore Sun that the man began yelling from the balcony during the musical's intermission at the Baltimore Hippodrome Theatre. Richard Scherr, a contributing sportswriter for The Baltimore Sun, was at the play when he recorded the incident. In the video obtained by the publication, audience members can be seen standing and looking up toward the balcony.

"I'll be honest, I was waiting to hear a gunshot," Scherr told The Baltimore Sun. "I thought, 'Here we go.'"

The unknown man was escorted out of the theatre and continued to shout, according to the publication. The show went on, but Scherr told The Baltimore Sun that the incident made it difficult for him to "pay attention to the second act."

"My heart was just racing," he told the publication.

"Fiddler on the Roof" is a play about a Jewish community living in pre-revolutionary Russia that also uses Yiddish-language in the musical. In October, a shooter opened fire at a synagogue in Pittsburgh and killed 11 people. The shooting suspect, Robert Bowers, was a known anti-Semite. Bowers allegedly burst into the synagogue and yelled "All Jews must die!" while firing, according to CBS News.

One hour before the shooting, Bowers wrote about the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society on the social media site Gab.

"HIAS likes to bring invaders in that kill our people. I can't sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics. I'm going in," he wrote.

The FBI's 2018 Hate Crime report found that 1,749 people were victims of anti-religious hate crimes that year, and 58.1 percent of the victims were crimes anti-Jewish hate crimes.

Sixty students at a high school in Wisconsin were accused of raising their arms in what appeared to be a Nazi salute. The picture was taken at Baraboo High School in Baraboo, Wisconsin, junior prom event, and sparked outrage on social media. The photographer who took the picture told local news website Madison365 that the photo was innocent, and he had asked the students to wave goodbye to their parents in the photo.

"I didn't tell them to salute anything," he told the publication. "There was none of that that was taken at that point in time that it was a salute of any kind. It was waving goodbye to their parents (and) having a good time. High five. There was nothing that diminished the quality of anyone's life. There was nothing that diminished anyone's stature in society, there was nothing that was intended to point a finger at anyone in their class who may have some kind of difference. There was none of that."

The one student who did not raise his hand in the photo claimed that he did not ask him to wave, according to the publication.
