Henry Winkler won his first Emmy Monday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles night after four decades in the business. Winkler won outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for playing Gene Cousineau on the HBO comedy Barry. Cousineau is Barry Berkman's (Bill Hader) acting coach on the series.
"Oh my God, oh my God," Winkler, 72, said when he took the stage. He joked, "I only have 37 seconds and I wrote this in 43 years." He added about his adult children, "And the kids! Kids! … You can go to bed now. Daddy won!!"
The star offered some advice, saying that "if you stay at the table long enough, the chips come to you."
"Tonight I got to clear the table," he said.
Winkler has been nominated for an Emmy six times and received a standing ovation from the audience. He was up for the award against Alec Baldwin, Louie Anderson, Tituss Burgess, Tony Shalhoub, Brian Tyree Henry and Keenan Thompson.
Three of Winkler's nominations came from his portrayal of Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli on Happy Day where he was nominated for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for his role.
Winkler, 72, knew Barry was special when he first read the script. "I auditioned. I read the script. I knew, I'm reading something wonderful here. I've read a lot of scripts over the years for pilots," he told Entertainment Tonight Online in March. "For men my age, it's usually, 'Oh, hold on a minute.' [He mimes covering the receiver of a phone.] 'Turn in your badge. Take a few days off.' And look what I got to do."
