The Mercedes-Benz performance lineup is expanding, combining AMG know-how with battery electric vehicle (BEV) technology.
The 2023 Mercedes-AMG EQE builds upon the foundation set forth by the Mercedes-Benz EQE 350 sedan. It retains the same proportions but has increased power and prowess. It slots below the EQS in the Mercedes lineup.
The car wears an AMG-specific black panel grille with hot-stamped vertical chrome struts. Digital Light projection headlamps feature a walk up and walk away sequence. The front splitter, diffuser, rear bumper and spoiler have a gloss black finish.
The Mercedes-AMG EQE is powered by a two-motor all-electric setup. It has fully variable all-wheel drive. Those motors combine with a 328-volt battery that has 90.6 kilowatt-hours of usable energy. The battery pack has been specially tuned for the AMG model.
Mercedes has designed the pack to be able to charge at a rate of up to 170 kilowatts at a fast charging station. It can recoup 112 miles of range in just 15 minutes when maxed out.
Like many electric vehicles (EVs), this new version of the EQE has regenerative braking that is offered in three stages. Drivers can choose their level of regeneration or opt for one-pedal driving.
Vehicles purchased with the AMG Dynamic Plus Package have increased performance over the Mercedes-AMG EQE base model. Power output is raised from 617 horsepower to 677, and torque is upped from 701 pound-feet to 738.
The package allows the car to travel from zero to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, two-tenths faster than the base model. Its top speed is raised from 137 mph to 149.
Mercedes equips the car with the AMG Sound Experience, a unique sound experience that utilizes special speakers, a bass actuator and a sound generator. "Authentic" and "Performance" sound programs are available in three levels of intensity: Balanced, Sport and Powerful.
The car's AMG Ride Control+ air suspension comes with adaptive adjustable damping that has had its parts optimized with AMG-specific wheel carriers, suspension links and antiroll bars. These combine with suspension tuning that pairs comfort with sporty drive dynamics in typical AMG fashion.
Drivers can choose between six different drive programs, four of which are traditional (Slippery, Comfort, Sport and Sport+). The other two feature Race Start, either with or without boost functionality.
Suspension setup can also be honed.
A high-performance braking system rounds out the mechanical upgrades with six-piston brake calipers up front and single-piston brake calipers around back. Up to 21-inch wheels are available.
The car's cabin has been treated in typical AMG fashion. Its seats are covered in MB-Tex and microfiber, and feature red topstitching. Buyers can option nappa leather. AMG emblems feature throughout the area.
The dynamic version of the EQE has a performance steering wheel that features a two-spoke design. The wheel, like the car's infotainment screen, features touch functionality that call up menus to be used to customize the drive experience and beyond.
Buyers can opt for the MBUX Hyperscreen, a large screen that expands from A-pillar to A-pillar across the width of the dashboard.
A number of other equipment and visual packages are available.
Pricing for the model has yet to be announced. It is expected to cost upwards of $70,000.
