How Jenna Bush Hager Lost Her Engagement Ring and Had to Hide It From Her Husband

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

During an episode of Today with Jenna and Hoda, Jenna Bush Hager shared a funny anecdote about misplacing her engagement ring, leading her to lie about it to her now-husband, Henry Chase Hager.

"Once when I was working here and I was racing to a shoot to fly somewhere. I had a bag of jewelry and, weirdly, I had everything in it," Jenna told Hoda Kotb on Thursday, April 18. She mentioned that her engagement ring was also in the bag. "I don't have much nice jewelry, but everything I had was in there."

She continued the story, "I was stressed. I get to the shoot and I'm looking around, I'm like, 'Oh no, I had a whole bag of jewelry." The host then recounted how she contacted a member of Today's security team. "So I called Jack here, who's an angel. I said, 'Jack, I just took off at JFK. I know it's gone, but can you just see what the airport says?'"

The duo first crossed paths in 2004 when Henry was working with her father, George W. Bush, on his presidential campaign. Three years later, Henry popped the question to Jenna in 2007, and the couple exchanged vows the following year.

She elaborated on her anxiety, expressing not only her distress over misplacing the ring but also the added pressure of concealing the mishap from Henry. "I couldn't even tell Henry because if I lost our engagement ring, it's priceless. So, I harbored a secret from Henry, too, which was hard," Jenna shared.

However, the stress didn't last too long, as she explained, "Some lovely man who I've never met returned it to security." Jenna also noted that the man was generous enough to bring the ring, even though it could have made him "late to his flight."

This isn't the first time Jenna has lost a valuable item. She joked, "I lose lots of things. Glasses phones, keys – all the time... It's nothing new. They seem to come back."
