Monoliths continue to be discovered in remote locations across the world, with the mysterious objects appearing at an English beach and a national park in Colorado over the weekend.
While the origins of some of the monoliths remain a mystery, others are being purposely set up outside businesses to draw customers.
Some people believed the first monoliths found were part of a marketing campaign or publicity stunt, while others have more far-fetched ideas of the objects being placed by aliens and stolen by the Grinch.
The first monolith, found in a remote part of Utah, drew comparisons to the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which a group of apes discovers a monolith and triggers a shift in evolution.
1. Utah, USA
On November 18, the first monolith was found in a Utah desert by a helicopter crew who were out counting bighorn sheep. The monolith was estimated to be around 10-12 feet tall, made from metal, and was planted in the ground. Just over a week after it was discovered, it was removed and replaced with a small pyramid.
2. Romania
Around the same time that the Utah monolith was removed on November 27, a similar object turned up in Piatra Neamt, Romania. However, compared to the Utah monolith, the object found in Romania was not as sleek or as well-built. On December 1, the Romanian monolith mysteriously disappeared.
3. California, USA
A day later, on December 2, another monolith was spotted on Pine Mountain, California. Unlike the object found in Utah, this monolith was not secured to the ground and could be knocked down easily. The next day, a group of men headed to Atascadero, San Luis Obispo County, took down the monolith and replaced it with a cross.
4. Nevada, USA
On Friday, a monolith was discovered at the Fremont Street Experience in Downtown Las Vegas, Nevada.
5. The Netherlands
On Sunday, another monolith was found in a nature reserve near Oudehorne, in the Netherlands. This mysterious object was also unlike the previously found monoliths as it was not shiny. It is thought that the monolith may have been there for some time as ice had formed around the structure.
6. England, UK
Also on Sunday, another monolith was found on the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England, UK. A group of people walking their dog discovered the strange object on the island's Compton Beach early in the morning. This monolith was around 10 feet tall and reflective.
7. Colorado, USA
Colorado has seen numerous monoliths appear over the last few days, with some objects' origins more mysterious than others. Monoliths were spotted at Chautauqua Park in South Boulder as well as in front of McDevitt Taco Supply in South Boulder, though the two sightings could have been of the same monolith, which may have been moved.
Additionally, last week, another monolith turned up at the Colorado Air and Space Port outside of Mile High Aircraft Services, but Bill Zempel, the lead mechanic, revealed that he built it as a joke.
8. Colombia
On December 5, a golden monolith was discovered in Colombia, standing in a field in the municipality of Chia. Local authorities have not yet commented on the structure and its origins are unknown.
Businesses are already capitalizing on the mystery surrounding the monoliths. On Sunday, another monolith was spotted outside Grandpa Joe's candy store in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. However, this one was placed there by the store as a marketing stunt. It was stolen overnight and quickly replaced by the store.
A group of artists called The Most Famous Artist is selling three "authentic alien monoliths" for $45,000, but in a video posted to Instagram, the group's founder Matty Mo said that they were not the creator of the monoliths and that they were not responsible for the removal of any monoliths.
Despite not definitively taking credit for the monoliths, Mo is adding to the mystery of the objects as he said in a video on Instagram: "I have a globally distributed studio capable of this, we've done headline worth projects like this, we have produced monoliths in my studio, and we are selling monoliths."
