How Tom Holland's 'Uncharted' Sets Up a Sequel

Uncharted sees Tom Holland take on the iconic role of Nathan "Nate" Drake and bring him to life on the big screen, and if the film adaptation has anything to say about it there will be more adventures to come.

The action-packed drama, which also stars Mark Wahlberg as Victor "Sully" Sullivan, sees its two lead characters go in search of the lost gold of Magellan, using mysterious keys to uncover its location.

Here's how their quest, its aftermath, and the characters they meet along the way helps set up a potential sequel.

How 'Uncharted' Sets Up a Sequel

As well as the aforementioned quest for Magellan's missing gold, a number of other future adventures are teased in Uncharted.

One that fans of Naughty Dog's original games will no doubt be familiar with is the adventure of Sir Francis Drake, who went seeking the lost treasure of El Dorado and who Nate claims to be a descendant of.

Near the start of the movie, a flashback sequence features a young Nate (Tiernan Jones) and his brother Sam (Rudy Pankow) and shows how they came to begin their treasure hunting adventures.

In the flashback, Sam decides to leave and start his journey as a treasure hunter rather than be arrested by the police but before he goes he gives Nate his ring, which was once owned by Sir Francis Drake.

This ring is a key to discovering the whereabouts of Drake's treasure, and it plays a part in the storyline featured in the first Uncharted game, "Drake's Fortune."

While a sequel to the film has yet to be ordered this plotline from the game is one that could be adapted for the big screen, and it'd no doubt be one that fans of the original would be excited to see reimagined.

The Uncharted film also introduces the character of Chloe Frazer (Sophia Ali), who first appeared in Naughty Dog's second Uncharted game "Among Thieves," which itself heavily inspires the film.

Frazer is an unlikely companion for Nate and Sully, and although Nate develops romantic feelings for her she betrays him not once, but twice.

Nate manages to successfully throw her off Magellan's fortune by solving a puzzle to its whereabouts and then leaving fake coordinates for Chloe to follow, thus ensuring he can find the treasure himself.

At the end of the movie, Chloe sees Nate and Sully as they fly away from the location of the treasure following an epic sky-battle—complete with pirate ships—against Braddock (Tati Gabrielle) and her crew.

Chloe is notably angry at the pair for thwarting her plans to find the treasure, and so she could easily become an adversary to them in future films as she did in the original games.

The film also has multiple post-credit scenes, one of which teases a new adventure for Nate and Sully after they come into possession of another map.

It's a scene that is obviously designed as a way to set up the next chapter in the duo's story, giving just enough information to entice viewers to want to see more.

The same goes for the film's other post-credit scene, which features the return of a familiar character thought long dead.

Whether the film will get a sequel will be determined by how well it does in both the domestic and international box office though.

Uncharted is out in cinemas in the U.K. now, and it will be given a theatrical release in the U.S. on Friday, February 18.
