In the premiere episode of the new season, "Brother," Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the Discovery crew team up with Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) of the U.S.S. Enterprise to investigate mysterious red signal bursts spread across the galaxy. Still jumpy after Season 1's war with the Klingons, Starfleet can't be sure whether they signal is a message of peace or an invitation to doom. But the stakes are also personal for Burnham, who hasn't spoken to her brother Spock (Ethan Peck), science officer aboard the Enterprise, for years.
Unfortunately, unlike the first season premiere of Discovery, Season 2 episodes will not air on broadcast television. A CBS All Access exclusive in the United States, the only way to legally stream Star Trek: Discovery's new season premiere is via the CBS streaming service.
CBS All Access is a subscription service, starting at $5.99 a month. Yes, there are commercials. It's $9.99 without commercials. There are also annual plans, at $59.99 or $99.99, but you won't need them to catch all of Star Trek: Discovery Season 2.
There are some discounts, including a 7-day free trial. Students with access to a college email address can get an additional 25 percent off the $5.99 subscription price.
Star Trek: Discovery can be streamed using Apple TV, Google Chromecast, Fire TV, PS4, Xbox One, Samsung and Vizo smart TVs and with the CBS All Access Roku channel. All Access can also be accessed through a browser, with Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer compatibility. You could also watch the Discovery premiere on your phone with the CBS app, available for Android and iPhone, which requires an All Access sign-in.
On last season of Star Trek: Discovery, war between the Federation and the Klingons broke out, inspired by a xenophobic Klingon religious zealot who successfully unites every Klingon house under his banner. Meanwhile, Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs), an impostor from the Terran Empire of the evil Mirror Universe, convinces a ship full of well-intentioned Starfleet science dupes to torture an animal to power their experimental, potentially galaxy-destroying spore drive. After wrecking the Klingon flagship, the first season took a detour to the Mirror Universe, where they killed Lorca and overthrew an evil space emperor (Michelle Yeoh), then immediately put her in charge of genociding the Klingons back in the normal universe. By the end, Starfleet learned important lessons—like not to do genocide or torture animals—with the help of a devastating bomb they placed in the core of the Klingon homeworld of Qo'noS, securing their propped up Federation-friendly Klingon government.
This season of Star Trek: Discovery will have 14 episodes, without a mid-season break. Once more for those in the back, the first episode of Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, "Brother," premieres January 17 at 8:30 p.m. EST on CBS All Access.
