Ice Cream Recall as Potential Metal Warning Issued

A Texas-based supermarket chain is recalling multiple varieties of its own manufactured ice cream due to potentially containing metal.

H-E-B, which is headquartered in San Antonio, on Saturday announced a voluntary recall of its 12-count packages of 3-ounce cups of Creamy Creations ice cream in select flavors for possibly containing unspecific metals. Flavors including chocolate, chocolate-and-vanilla combination, and lime-orange sherbet combination, are affected.

The affected products, which were distributed to all H-E-B stores in Texas and Mexico and its affiliates Central Market, Joe V's Smart Shop and Mi Tienda stores, have not led to any consumer injuries, according to a statement issued by the company.

"All product related to this recall has been removed from store shelves," the statement reads. "H-E-B is working to have the products back on shelves as soon as possible. Customers who purchased the products should not consume the items and can return them to the store for a full refund."

Newsweek reached out to H-E-B via email for additional comment.

Consumers are requested to look at UPC and code dates, located not on individual cups, but on the back of the products' bags, to see if their products are affected.

Customers with any questions or concerns about the current H-E-B recall can call 1-855-432-4438 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST.

A similar recall was announced by the company back in May 2018, when EconoMax and Hill Country Fare ice creams—in addition to Creamy Creations sherbets—were recalled "for broken metal in processing equipment found during routine maintenance."

That recall did not lead to any reported injuries to consumers and like this current one was issued more as a precautionary measure.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning on a series of ice cream products made by Belgian Yummies of Fort Myers, Florida.

Products have been recalled over undeclared allergens as customers were warned about the risk of "serious or life-threatening" reactions. They included 4-ounce packages of Ice Cream Sandwiches and 5-liter containers and 4.75-liter pans of Gelato after discovering that product packaging that did not show "the presence of wheat, soy, egg, coconut and/or peanuts and FD&C Yellow #5."

"The problem was caused by outdated labels being used during the packaging process," the company indicated in a press release. Labels were immediately corrected and updated ingredient lists were sent to wholesalers after the outdated labels become apparent, they added.

In late March, a California company recalled thousands of packs of mini ice cream bars sold in 16 states because they could be contaminated with salmonella.
