Rapper French Montana stirred up hip hop fans by tweeting that he could go head to head in terms of hits with To Pimp a Butterfly mastermind Kendrick Lamar.
In an interview with Complex last week, Montana said that he could rival Lamar on a festival stage and that he has more hits, when asked if there was anyone he'd like to face off against besides Tory Lanez who the rapper went up against in a versus-style Instagram live video. "You could put somebody like Kendrick Lamar next to me on the same stage in a festival—I might outshine him," he said. "Not because I'm a better rapper or whatever it is. I just got more hits. Kendrick Lamar got albums. He got masterpieces, but if you was to put us on a festival stage, I would outshine him, cause I got more hits than Kendrick Lamar."
In a tweet late on Tuesday, Montana stood by his comments about Lamar in an all-caps tweet. He doubled down, saying that he had just as many hits as the "Humble" rapper and said that he believed in himself. "IF WE JUST TALKING ABOUT ANTHEMS, !! ME VS KENDRICK HIT FOR HIT ! I BELIEVE I CAN GO NECK TO NECK !! I BEEN MAKING HITS FOR A LONG TIME ! IT AINT MY FAULT I BELIEVE IN MYSELF," he wrote. "HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION ? HOW MANY TIMES I GOTTA PROVE MYSELF BEFORE I GET MINE."
Fans couldn't help but be baffled by Montana's confidence, because Lamar is one of the most celebrated artists of our time. Internet's busiest music nerd Anthony Fantano responded to Montana's tweet with some wise and kind advice. "[Y]ou don't have to do this, man," he responded.
Fans preceded to rip into Montana, showing just how many hits Kendrick has in one tweet. Of course, there were memes clowning on Montana almost instantly. One person shared a video, vowing to skip any French Montana song that comes on. Another person brought up the time that Diddy edited Montana out of a picture with him, Kendrick and Jay-Z and said that Diddy was right to cut him.
Rapper Young Thug also jumped on to weigh in on the (one-sided) beef, calling Montana "stupid" and a "fool."
One fan went so far as to create a poll that pitted the two against each other. The poll, which has received over 47,000 votes as of 9 a.m. ET Wednesday morning, showed Lamar as the clear victor with 90 percent of the votes.
