France's Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve has called the killing in Magnanville of a senior French police officer and his wife a "despicable act of terrorism."
Addressing the public following the attack Monday evening, in which a police commander was stabbed to death before his partner was taken hostage and later killed in their home near Paris, Cazeneuve said that there had been "a total mobilization" of government for months in the face of heightened threats and that this would continue.
A three-year-old boy was also taken hostage but survived.
The attacker, named by French sources as Larossi Abballa, was killed during a police assault. He had spent time in jail over links to jihadist groups and had been under police surveillance.
Speaking on Tuesday, French President Francois Hollande described the incident as "unquestionably a terrorist act."
