The Issue: The New Monuments Men Saving Ancient Sites From Isis

In this week's issue of Newsweek Europe our cover story looks at a remarkable group we're calling the new Monuments Men.

Academics at Harvard and Cambridge universities are racing to preserve some of the most important and treasured ancient sites in the Middle East from the militant group ISIS, or Islamic State. Their secret weapon: high definition 3-D cameras that volunteers use to take pictures of these sites before the militants can destroy them.

Also in the issue, long-time Newsweek correspondent Owen Matthews looks at Russian President Vladimir Putin's likely response to the crash of a Russian jetliner in the Sinai desert. Many governments believe this is the work of militants aligned with ISIS. If that turns out to be the case, history suggests Putin will hit back hard.

And finally, in this week's Downtime section, we interview Adam Sisman. He's written a biography of perhaps the greatest of all spy novelists, John le Carré. Sisman describes a complicated, fascinating man who at times appears unsure of the difference between fact and fiction—even in his own life.

All in the new issue of Newsweek Europe—available now.
