Jazz Jennings Completes 'The Final Step of Transitioning,' Reveals She Suffered Complications After Gender Confirmation Surgery

Jazz Jennings completed "the final steps of transitioning."

The I Am Jazz star, who was born male but has since transitioned to female, gave her first interview to ABC News after undergoing gender confirmation surgery. During the interview, which was documented nine-weeks after Jennings' life-changing operation, the 18-year-old reflected on the changes and complications she faced during the process and said finally completing the long journey was "like a dream."

"This is a moment that I had always envisioned and just experiencing it was so surreal. I was like, 'I can't believe this is happening,'" Jennings said while speaking with Nightline's JuJu Chang in an interview that aired on Monday.

Jennings's transition is a long time coming. She was two years old when she first asked her mother when "the good fairy was going to come with her magic wand and change my penis into a vagina?" When Jennings was 14, she started sharing her transition with fans on her TLC show, which documented her day-to-day life—taking hormone blockers and hormone therapy—leading up to her gender confirmation surgery.

"I've gone through the whole medical process and this is really the last thing that will validate my identity as a woman," Jennings said. "There is nothing else after this. I just get to be myself, be in the body that I've always wanted. And then I can live my life as just Jazz."

As much of a dream come true Jennings's operation was, it didn't come without a few nightmares. She revealed she did battle a complication following the initial surgery and had to undergo a second procedure.

"There was just an unfortunate event and setback where things did come apart and there was a complication," she said. "I had to come back in for another procedure, but it was just all part of the journey. The good thing though is that it was only cosmetic and not external so it wasn't too dramatic."

I Am Jazz will reveal some of Jennings's final steps of transitioning when it returns to TLC with Season 5 in January 2019. Fans will also get to tune into a few other major life moments the Florida teen is slated to endure, including her first prom and her 18th birthday celebration.
