Jennie-O Turkey has recalled hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of meat amid fears it is contaminated with salmonella.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced on Friday that manufacturer Jennie-O Turkey Store Sales, Inc. had recalled around 164,210 pounds of products containing raw, ground turkey.
The products were made between October 22, 2018 and October 23, 2018, the agency stated.
A total of seven products were affected by the recall: Jennie-O Ground Turkey 93% Lean, 7% Fat, stamped with the use or freeze-by dates of November 12, 2018 and November 13 2018; 1lb servings of Ground Turkey 93% Lean, 7% Fat, with the use or freeze-by date November 12, 2018 were also affected.
In addition, 1lb packages of Italian Seasoned Ground Turkey and 3lb Stater Bros 85% Lean, 15% Fat All Natural Ground Turkey, both with use or freeze-by dates of November 12, 2018 were recalled. As were 3lb packages of Jennie-O Ground Turkey 85% Lean, 15% Fat; and 2.5lb packages of Jennie-O Ground Turkey Turkey 93% Lean, 7% Fat, both with a use-or-freeze-by date of November 13.
The announcement came the same day the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 52 people have fallen ill with salmonella across 26 states and the District of Columbia, since November 8 2018. It did not mention the recall.
The USDA said in a statement:"Patients have reported eating different types and brands of turkey products purchased from many different stores, handling raw turkey pet food and/or raw turkey, or working with live turkeys or living with someone who handled live turkeys."
The ongoing salmonella outbreak that was first reported in November 2017 has so far sickened at least 216 people across 38 states.
It is believed to be the same form of salmonella which has struck Canada, CNN reported citing the CDC.
In, Canada 22 cases of salmonella have been reported between April 2017 and November 2018.
The Public Health Agency of Canada said in a statement: "Based on the investigation findings to date, exposure to raw turkey and raw chicken products has been identified as the likely source of the outbreak. Many of the individuals who became sick reported eating different types of turkey and chicken products before their illnesses occurred."
Jenny-O Turkey was also involved in a recall of 147,276 pounds of raw ground turkey in mid-November. Those products were products in on September 11, 2018.
