Jets Adam Gase Named New York Jets GM and Twitter Reacts With Villainous Memes

On Wednesday, the New York Jets fired their vice president of player personnel, Brian Heimerdinger and the team's longtime General Manager Mike Maccagnan. Adam Gase will take over as interim general manager while the Jets' Chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson searches for Maccagnan's replacement.

In a statement, Johnson praised Maccagnan for his help stating, "Mike helped to execute the strategic vision of the organization during the last four seasons and especially the past few months." Johnson goes on to justify today's choice "what would be in the best long-term interests of the New York Jets."

This change makes Gase the only person in the NFL who holds both the titles of Head Coach and General Manager, causing him to be likened to a few powerful villains by Twitter users, including the leader of the White Walker faction on Game of Thrones, the Night King.

While the Game of Thrones reference has occupied much of the chatter, Gase's sudden increase in power is also prompting other villainous comparisons. Users have also drawn comparisons between Gase and Star Wars villain Emperor Palpatine.

Gase only started coaching the Jets in January, so many see his role as acting General Manager as happening a little fast. According to ESPN, Maccagnan also had a significant role in initially hiring Gase, which only makes the move more shocking. However, Gase and Maccagnan reportedly disagreed on quite a few things, one of those being the acquiring of Jets running back, Le'Veon Bell. Gase supposedly didn't Bell, but Maccagnan pushed for his inclusion.

ESPN suggests the GM position could be taken up by Philadelphia Eagles executive Joe Douglas, who has some ties to Gase.
