Actor and artist Jim Carrey has hit out at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell over his apparent failure to impose stricter gun control laws while unveiling his latest political cartoon.
Carrey, who frequently posts his artwork online, accused McConnell of doing more damage to the U.S. than 9/11 mastermind Osama Bin Laden while sharing a drawing of a hand dipping a $100 bill in a pool of blood.
Carrey revealed his latest piece after figures from the Gun Violence Archive suggest that the number of firearm-related in the U.S. has reached more than 10,000 this year already.
More than 2,700 people were killed in the New York terror attacks on September 11, 2001, after two hijacked planes crashed into the twin towers at the World Trade Center.
"10,000 gun deaths in 2019 and the year is far from over," Carrey wrote while tweeting out an image of the cartoon. "What Osama bin Laden did to us was terrible but he doesn't hold a candle to Mitch McConnell."
The comparison between the al Qaida terrorist—personally responsible for orchestraing the deliberate killing of thousands of Americans—and McConnell, over the overall number of gun-related deaths in the U.S., was angrily rejected by some.
"Who could have ever predicted that one day Jim Carrey would go crazy?" tweeted conservative political commentator Michael J. Knowles. "Jim Carrey used to be a comedian...until Trump broke him," added politics writer Nick Short.
McConnell was heavily criticized earlier this year in the wake of the mass shootings which occurred in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, which occurred a matter of hours apart from each other and left a total of 29 people dead.
McConnell was condemned for blocking a Senate vote on a bill passed by the House of Representatives in February which would require full background checks to be run against every person who wishes to purchase a gun.
Several Democratic lawmakers and politicians also urged McConnell to call the Senate back for an emergency session so that the background check bill could be passed and move closer into law in the wake of the latest mass shootings to hit the U.S.
Tens of thousands of people also tweeted using the #MassacreMitch hashtag to vent their frustration at McConnell for not allowing the Senate to vote for the background check bill. Many also accused McConnell of costing people's lives by pandering to the the NRA, the powerful pro-gun lobbying group.
Carrey has often satirized news events with his artwork. Recent examples include the death of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while in prison, Sarah Sanders stepping away from her role as White House press secretary and Donald Trump's 73rd birthday.
According to Gun Violence Archive data, there have been a total of 38,286 firearm incidents in the U.S. up to September 5, of which there have been 10,110 deaths. The number of children aged up to 11 who have been killed or injured by a gun so far this year is 472.
