Joe Girardi Coaching Rumors: Former Yankees Manager Connected to Reds

It's beginning to look like former Yankees manager Joe Girardi could perhaps land a new coaching job.

Multiple reports on Wednesday connected him to the vacant Cincinnati Reds job. He, David Bell and Brad Ausmus will all be interviewed for the gig, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. The Reds have also interviewed number of internal candidates, including interim manager Jim Riggleman.

"Right now the target candidates either have managed at the big league level or have some big league coaching experience, have some minor league managing experience," said Dick Williams, the Reds' president of baseball operations, according to the Enquirer. "I don't see us targeting a lot of completely out-of-the-box candidates. I think we're going to want people who have a level of comfort in the dugout, preferably at the big league level in their background."

Fancred's Jon Heyman reported that Girardi's interview, as well as a handful of others, has already taken place. There's also soon to be an opening in Baltimore, since Orioles manager Buck Showalter is reportedly done as manager.

Girardi, who also coached the Marlins for a year, managed the Yankees for nearly a decade and won a championship in 2009. He got the boot last year and was replaced by Aaron Boone.

After he was fired in 2017, the former Yankees coach was floated as a potential new manager for a number of teams, none of which panned out. Girardi expressed before this season began that he'd want to coach again.

"I just want another opportunity," Girardi told WSCR-AM in February. "I don't really have any specifics. Anything that's come my way is evaluated. I've been fortunate enough to manage 11 years. I'd like to manage more."

He might get his shot soon.
