Jose Mourinho dedicated victory to the Manchester United fans after his side overcame Manchester City 2-1 in the EFL Cup.
Mourinho suffered a comprehensive defeat at the hands of his arch rival Pep Guardiola in the season's first Manchester derby in September, but gained a measure of revenge as United bounced back from its 4-0 hammering at Chelsea on Sunday.
Juan Mata struck in the second half, and a City side lacking several of its protagonists failed to muster any kind of attacking response despite the introduction of star striker Sergio Aguero late on.
"I'm happy. The players did everything, they deserved to win," Mourinho told Sky Sports.
"We are obviously happy because, in the last week when everything has gone against us, the fans have felt deeply the negative results and today was a good chance to clean that feeling.
"To win against Manchester City gives everyone a better feeling and I'm especially happy for the players and the fans."
While Mourinho will have been pleased with a victory that moves his team into the EFL Cup quarter-finals and takes a little of the pressure off his back, Guardiola is now in the middle of the worst run of form of his managerial career, with City winless in six games.
The Spaniard declared himself "proud" of City's performance. The club was defending the trophy it won last season under Manuel Pellegrini.
