Kamala Harris Isn't Allowed to Use Emojis Since Becoming Vice President

Kamala Harris has had to sacrifice her use of emojis ever since taking on the role of vice president of the United States.

The first female VP made the tongue-in-cheek comment whilst appearing as a guest on Late Night With Seth Meyers. She also discussed life with a heavy security detail, Joe Biden's marijuana pardon plan, and the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade, calling it a "travesty of justice."

Taking a break from serious topics, the 57-year-old was asked by talk show host Seth Meyers about how her life had changed since becoming the 49th vice president.

"Obviously, you have to make a great many sacrifices to hold this office but is it true that you can no longer send emojis?" Meyers asked.

"Okay, high class problems," Harris acknowledged. "I have not received, directly, an emoji in a year and a half."

With security protocols in place, Harris suggested she can no longer be part of group chats or send and receive casual messages.

"For example, our family is very competitive, be it Wordle or other things and the family group chat is no longer a thing," Harris said. "It was my father-in-law's birthday and we were talking to the kids and I thought, okay, the kids can do a video for his birthday, and normally I'd send the family text, but this time we had to do like a phone tree."

It's not just Harris' phone habits that have had to change since she took office. She explained how her life with her husband has been forced to change too.

"My husband Doug [Emhoff) and I, the first Second Gentleman of the United States," at this point the crowd cheered Harris' statement, and Meyers quipped, "I feel like we're not focusing enough on what white men have accomplished with your rise."

"I know, we have joked about that too," Harris said. "But we love to take walks, and these days the walks are quite different." With all of the security personnel protecting them at all times, she went on to compare their outings these days to a scene from The Godfather.

"You know that scene when Michael is in Italy, he had to leave? He 's courting that woman and they decide to take a walk through the village. So the shot is just the two of them taking this lovely walk, and then it pans out and the whole village is with them. That's what our walks are like."

Harris' appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday was her first appearance on a late-night network TV show since she became the vice president in January 2021.

Most of her 15-minute appearance was spent discussing political issues aside from the brief aforementioned insight into her personal life.
