Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes looks like legitimate star in shootout loss to New England Patriots

Kansas City Chiefs second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes has taken the NFL by storm. The former first round pick entered Sunday's primetime matchup at New England with 1,513 yards, 14 touchdowns and two interceptions on 112 of 176 passing, taking claim as one of the league's fastest-rising stars.

Throughout the week, pundits noted that the Patriots were 23-0 against quarterbacks younger than 25 years old, noting the challenge ahead for the 23-year-old Chiefs signal-caller. While Mahomes wasn't able to end that streak, he did solidify himself as an elite NFL quarterback once again.

The second-year quarterback finished Sunday's game with 352 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions on 23 of 36 passing, which included leading Kansas City back from a 24-9 deficit at halftime and tying the game at 40 on the Chiefs' final possession.

Mahomes connected with Tyreek Hill on a 75-yard pass to tie the game with 3:03 remaining, which surpassed his 67-yard touchdown to Kareem Hunt earlier in the game as the longest of his career.

For his efforts, Mahomes became the first quarterback in franchise history to throw for 300 or more yards in five consecutive games, according to the Chiefs PR department's official Twitter account.

Though Mahomes suffered his first loss as a starting quarterback, there's no denying that Sunday's performance was the latest in what has been an impressive campaign for the emerging star quarterback.

But what separated this game from the quarterback's previous performances was his ability to bounce back. Both of Mahomes' interceptions came in the first half as the Chiefs trailed by double digits. The bulk of the quarterback's impressive stat line took place in crunch time, throwing all four of his touchdowns in the game's final two quarters.

On the other side, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots played exactly as you'd expect. Brady finished with 340 yards and a touchdown on 24 of 35 passing, which included marching the Pats 65 yards downfield to setup a 28-yard game-winning field goal by Stephen Gostkowski.

The future Hall of Famer made less mistakes than the young gunslinger, but Mahomes managed to hold his own in a shootout against one of the greatest players in NFL history. Despite the losing effort, the 23-year-old quarterback proved that he's worth all of the growing hype.
