Officials in Kansas City, Missouri, are searching for a man who was filmed kicking a cat "like a field goal" on high school grounds.

The disturbing footage shows a man on a field at the Center High School on May 22, being cheered on by several onlookers shouting "filed goals" before running up and kicking the cat.

The animal can then be seen flying through the air as those witnessing the abuse erupt into laughter.

Kansas City officials posted the shocking video online in an attempt to find the those responsible and file animal cruelty charges.

When asked why it was necessary to circulate the full and graphic footage, uploaded originally onto Snapchat, Kansas City authorities replied via Twitter: "It was needed to show how horrible of a situation it was and how sick the individuals are who did this."

It is not known if the people in the clip are students at the school where the incident occurred.

Animal welfare officials in the city described the footage as "just horrific."

John Baccala, spokesperson for KCMO Animal Control, toldKansas City Star: "I can't imagine anyone doing that to an animal. It's so horrifying to watch. It makes me sick to look at it.

"If someone's going to treat an animal like that, how are they going to treat a human?"

Baccala said authorities do not know the condition of the cat following the shocking attack.

"We see a lot of those animals come in after they have already been suffering for a long time or have had something happen to them," Tom Fugate, who works with Kansas City Pet Project, told Kansas City's Fox 4 News. "But to actually see it in action happening to an animal, it was really difficult to watch."

If you have any information, call KC's Action Center at 311. If you live outside of the KC area, call 816-513-1313.
