Kanye West left the White House with the full support of the National Rifle Association on Thursday. West went to Washington, D.C., to support President Donald Trump sign the Music Modernization Act.
While sitting with Trump in the Oval Office, West gave an impassioned 10-minute speech touching on a number of things, like saying Trump's Make America Great Again cap makes him "feel like Superman." He also said the president was on "his hero's journey right now." It was his comments on the Second Amendment, however, that caught the attention of the NRA. They threw their full support behind him.
The topic of gun control came up during Thursday's meeting when 41-year-old West offered his two cents on the nationwide debate over gun violence in America. "The problem is illegal guns. Illegal guns is the problem, not legal guns," West said. "We have the right to bear arms."
The NRA came to the Ye rapper's defense shortly after, writing on Twitter, "#Kanye couldn't have said it better: Illegal guns are the problem, and we have the right to bear arms. The #NRA's nearly six million members are glad to see a celebrity who gets it, and who is will to stand with the #2A."
Trump also appeared to be inspired by many of West's sentiments shared during the meeting. The president even suggested the Chicago native could run for office after his potential second term in office. Trump offered a response of, "could very well be," when reporters asked if he saw West as a future candidate.
He also said West "can speak for me anytime he wants." Trump continued, "He's a smart cookie. He gets it."
West has long considered running for president. He first announced his plans to take the White House at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2015, then he mentioned it again during an interview with Power 92 Chicago in August. "If I decide to do it, it will be done. I'm not gonna try," West said. "Yes, 100 percent it could happen. 2024."
