Katy Perry Suffers a Nearly NSFW Wardrobe Malfunction on 'American Idol'

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

Katy Perry may be on her way out on American Idol — but she still has a few surprises up her sleeve (even to her)!

On Tuesday, April 16, Perry took to Instagram to give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the wardrobe malfunction that occurred during the episode the night before. The singer — who stunned in a futuristic metallic crop top — was desperate for help for her "top to stay on."

"If it's not fixed, this show is gonna get more than it wanted," she told the camera, as stylists behind her attempted to secure the top in the back.

As everyone got to work in an attempt to fix Perry's wardrobe mishap, fellow judge Luke Bryan stepped in and confidently declared that he "got it," going in with a pair of scissors before realizing that he did not, in fact, actually know what to do. (Perry, for her part, had a wrench in her hand.)

The clip also featured footage from the show, where she told host Ryan Seacrest that Roman Collins' performance of "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" "broke my top off." She also quipped that the wardrobe malfunction proves that "it is a woman's world."

"Ratings, here we come! Ratings!" Bryan and third Idol judge, Lionel Richie.

Both the audience and the fans couldn't get over the mishap — or the judges' commentary.

"You know it's serious fashion when the power tools come out 😂," one social media user joked in the comment section of Perry's post.

"#ratings 😂 we'll take it KP!" wrote another, while a third person laughed at how she had to cover her chest with a pillow.

"😂😂😂 The pillow!! 😂 ☠️🙌👑," they wrote.

Still, others used the moment to mourn Perry's last few episodes on Idol.

"I can't think of ANYONE who will fill her spot when she leaves smh," commented another follower.

Perry announced in February that this season would be her last after seven years of serving as a judge on the wildly popular singing competition series.

Instead, she told Entertainment Tonight in an interview published Tuesday, "I'm just trying to make space for other things."

"It's not like me ending this show means I'm going to go retire on an island, even though that would be fabulous," she explained. "I'm gonna go to work."

"Work," it seems, means resuming her career as a bonafide pop star, recently teasing her new KP6 era on social media.
