Kesha is set to make a musical comeback, releasing her first song in almost three years, despite her ongoing legal battle with record producer Dr. Luke and Sony Music.
Just two weeks after performing with DJ Zedd at Coachella, singing his 2015 track "True Colors," the pair have teamed up to record a studio version of the song—to be released on Friday.
Zedd teased the release on Twitter by posting the single's cover art on Wednesday:
In another message alluding to Kesha's legal pleas to be freed from her recording contract with Dr. Luke's Kemosabe Records—a subsidiary of Sony's RCA label—Zedd added: "Music can be freedom!"
Kesha's music career has been on something of a hiatus since she filed legal documents in 2014 seeking an injunction to record music outside of her contract with Luke, alleging the music producer abused her sexually, verbally and emotionally. He has maintained his denial of any wrongdoing.
In February, a New York Supreme Court denied a preliminary injunction. For its part, Sony said it had offered Kesha the opportunity to resume her recording career without having to work with Luke, which Judge Shirley Kornreich deemed a reasonable solution.
It seems Kesha is indeed taking advantage of that offer as Zedd tweeted on Wednesday that the release of "True Colors" is authorized by Kemosabe and RCA.
He said:
Luke responded:
Taking to Instagram earlier in the week, Kesha shared a picture of herself in the recording studio. She captioned it praising Zedd for allowing her to release new music.
Most of Kesha's claims against Luke were dismissed in court earlier in April, but her case to end her recording contract is ongoing.
