Watch Labrador's Excited Reaction to Hearing Owner Say One Magic Word

A black Labrador could barely contain his excitement after hearing his owner say one of his favorite words in the whole world.

Dexter has lit up his owner India's life from the very day he arrived at his new home in a rural area of the Midlands in the U.K. "They say dogs come into your life when you most need them, and that could not be truer," India told Newsweek. "I lived in a one bedroom cottage, worked full time, and it was absolutely not an appropriate time to get a dog, especially not a big one."

However, India said she simply "couldn't say no" to Dexter. "Without going into too much detail on the circumstances as they were a bit sad, I was offered Dexter by a family friend. Looking back now, I cannot thank them enough," India said.

"I made it work and honestly I don't know how I lived without him. He's special in so many ways—his name Dexter is a nod in memory to a special person who is no longer with us."

Dexter, whom she also calls "Shnootle" from time to time, rarely leaves India's side. "He comes to work with me every single day and I think his presence in the office is sometimes more important than mine," she said.

All that time spent around humans appears to have rubbed off on Dexter, who has developed a pretty impressive understanding of the English language.

Canine researcher Stanley Coren told the American Psychological Association that the average dog is capable of learning up to 165 human words and as many as 250 in some extraordinary cases.

Dexter's vocabulary might not stretch that far, but he does have a pretty good understanding of the words associated with his favorite pastime—swimming—and reacts accordingly.

In a video posted to Instagram under the handle schnootle.hound, India captured Dexter's reaction when she told him they were going to the beach for the day. The mere mention of the word "beach" is enough to get the Labrador excitedly bounding around the room. "The word 'canal' has the same effect," India said. "Beach, canal, rivers, swimming, dinner and ball ... all equally exciting."

India said she likes to take Dexter on a beach holiday in early January, regardless of the weather conditions. This recent trip didn't go entirely to plan though.

"The traffic was AWFUL - it took us nearly 3 hours to get there, so I'm very lucky Dex loves being in the car, as it usually means we're going to work, which he loves, or somewhere even more fun," India said. "Then as soon as we got there the heavens opened and we were worried we might actually get struck by lightning."

India said, however, that Dexter was happy to brave the elements. "We're hard adventurers though and we saw it through until the sun came out—we even got a double beach rainbow! So it was absolutely worth it in the end."

The dog owner has been "blown away" by the response the video has gotten. At the time of publication, it's been liked more than 3.3 million times on Instagram.

"I think we see so much negativity in the media and stresses of day to day life that his pure joy just struck a chord with people," India said. "I set up this account with the purpose of spreading fun and joy, not to be judgmental. So I think the message is just be kind, just enjoy what you do have and take happiness from the little things and don't EVER be embarrassed about it!"

The good news for Dexter is that India is already planning another trip to the beach this weekend, though she's kept it a secret from her pet pooch "for obvious reasons."

"He's honestly my best little buddy, he makes even the worst day better simply by being him. He's got such a lovely sunny little disposition he just warms my heart and really helps me get things into perspective when I am having a bad day," she said.
