Labrador Trying Very Hard To Sing Wins Pet of the Week

From a cat's entertaining battle with a Halloween decoration to a dog climbing into the dryer to be with his blanket, we've seen lots of hilarious pet stories this week.

Our readers have also been sending their best funny pictures and videos of their pets for our Newsweek Pet of the Week line-up.

If you want your pet to be in the next Pet of the Week line-up, don't forget to follow the instructions at the end of this story.

Winner

Elio the dog
Elio loves singing when his owner plays the harmonica. Two years old, this week's Pet of the Week is Elio the Labrador. Vera Danilova

This week, our Newsweek Pet of the Week is Elio, a 2-year-old Labrador who loves to try his hand at singing.

"He is still very much full of puppy power and energy," owner Vera Danilova from Virginia told Newsweek.

In a hilarious video, Elio tries his best to flex his pipes and create a tune—a habit his owner says is fairly common.

"He began singing when he was a year old—he only sings when I play the harmonica," said Denilova. "I think he's singing the blues or he's bemoaning my awful harmonica-playing."

An affectionate and playful pup, Elio's owner said that he loves playing fetch and getting back scratches. He even helps to clean the backyard by bringing sticks to the fire pit.

Finalists

Buddy and Mimi

Our first finalists this week are Yorkshire terrier Buddy and poodle mix Mimi who live with owner Reta Durham.

"I love this little rascal who has kept me sane and loves me unconditionally," Durham told Newsweek, talking about 3-year-old Buddy who poses in a blue jumper in his picture.

Mimi came to live with Reta when her best friend and the dog's owner, Bob, sadly died. Reta has cared for Mimi ever since her friend's death in 2021.

"Mimi is a sweet dog," said Durham. "And I love her so very much."

Sargeant the dog
Sargeant, a half Belgian shepherd, is full of "funniness and cuddly moments" according to his owner. James Mora

Next up this week is Sargeant, a half Belgian shepherd who failed to pass his sheriff dog qualifications because "he's too cuddy and fun," according to owner James Mora, from California.

"He's full of funniness and cuddly moments," Mora told Newsweek. "He lives to ride in car and likes to bark at passers by as we attempt to train him."

The fun-loving pup is pretty demanding too, often asking for ice cream cones or treats from Starbucks. "[He] hugs my arm until I give in," said Mora. "He's a bit demanding but at least he's a brave pup that knows what he wants and insists on getting those treats."

Espresso the cat

Last but not least this week is Espresso, a cat who was found by owner Rachael Rose while she was waiting at a drive-through.

"[I] kept hearing this sad and scared meow so as soon as I had gotten my espresso I pulled to the side and got out to look for him," Rose told Newsweek.

It wasn't until two hours later that she managed to catch the terrified cat, who was eventually convinced to come out for food.

"There was a really bad storm the night before and from the looks of how tiny he was we think he had been my himself for a few days," she said.

After catching him, they took newly named Espresso to the vet where he got the proper care.

"My intention was to find a home for him but I fell in love," said Rose, who promptly took him in. "Flash forward to a few months later and you can see he fits right in. He has a family now."
